The YANKEES are back in first place! The Evil Empire STRIKES BACK!*
*I realize just how pathetic it is that I'm celebrating
a simple change of division leads when they're only a half-game ahead
and Baltimore and Boston are tied for second. And the fact that it took
until July 18 for them to do it -- it's kind of akin to celebrating
David Cone's second win in 2000 (only took him four months); tomorrow
they still gotta defend their lead and worry about the fact that their
starting rotation is in worse shape than the veterans' hospital, their centerfielder is a 200-lb dead-weight 36-year-old statue, and
that they're a mere nine games over .500 in mid-July, the time of year
when they usually take their most commanding lead of the season. But
when your $205M team starts the season out 11-18 and provides the AAAA
team that is Tampa Bay with a third -- yes, count
'em 4/12 -- of their total road wins on the season and can't even put
up a winning record against your own division (17-21 vs. AL East
opponents) -- first place anything is a reason to get excited. If the
season were to end today, we'd be in the playoffs. (Naturally, the
season doesn't end today and we have to defend this for another 2 1/2
months...but you gotta start someplace.)
